Here’s a quick note about domain censorship. Just because your business stays free of political and social entanglements doesn’t mean that you can safely operate online. Thanks to a growing number of mob-takedown specialists, anyone can shut down your business for practically any reason.
Censorship has become big business.
If you think Google, Facebook, Amazon, #FakeNews corporations and “big tech” firms are the only ones fighting free speech, you’re wrong.
New companies have emerged that create the illusion of mob dissent for a fee. So far, we’ve seen these companies work to force action from Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and other “big tech” firms.
When a leftist activist group identifies someone who’s political, social, scientific, or economic issues, they use their pre-paid mobs to pressure websites, banks, payment processors, and other services into de-platforming and de-personing people whom they dislike.
The tactic works well. Too well.
About Domain Censorship
One of the most well-publicized recent examples of domain censorship occurred when leftist political and social activists hired “mob” firms to pressure domain registrars to cancel the domain Gab.com, the “free speech” social network.
In the past, anyone could have a domain to which they could publish any legal content. Now, if someone doesn’t like you or your brand, you can lose everything, including your website.
This Matters to Everyone
Do you really think that Google only censors facts about political campaigns? Do you think that Facebook only de-platforms “conservative” news outlets? I don’t think so.
Bottom line: Big Tech will restrict, censor, and reshape content relevant to any topic that interests them. Initially, these companies are interested in censorship because they’re driven by radical ideology. But, don’t you think that money can get them interested in censorship?
This Matters to You
So, what happens if your competitor hires a mob to pressure Big Tech to de-platform your business? What happens if your competitor bypasses the middleman and pays Google to suppress your brand in search results?
What happens if you’ve registered your domain with Google and Google decides that your company shouldn’t be online? What happens when social media closes your accounts and uses AI to scrub mentions of your brand?
Example of Domain Censorship
LegitScript is a company that bullies registrars to execute take-down requests. According to Rob Monster, CEO of Epik,
Most registrars comply with Legitscript takedown requests without question let alone a court order.
Of course, LegitScript is only one company that uses thuggery for domain censorship. Just recently, a domain registrar, Namecheap, suspended nofile.io, a domain owned by a file hosting service. You can read about that at Torrentfreak.
Basically, any domain can get shut down for any reason as long as an organization with sufficient mob-credibility makes the demand.
No Due Process
I’m not saying that registrars are always without merit when they place on “serverHold.” What I’m saying is this type of domain censorship often occurs without a legitimate reason.
Also, when this happens, the domain owners have no recourse.
You might not express political, social, economic, religious, or scientific opinions that the Left wants to silence. You might not aim to provide a platform where people can lawfully exercise free speech. Heck, you might not operate a file hosting service or attempt to sell herbal supplements.
However, the list of companies falling victim to domain censorship attacks is growing.
What are you going to do when your competitor, in the form of a mob, uses censorship to attack your business?
